Notes on final script

Notes on final script

Before and during the shooting Carla Simon made annotations about the characters, actors direction, staging, camera positioning, shots… It’s a very valuable document which depicts the making and the actual thinking of the film. A document always kept by the side of the director on shooting days.

12. INT.ESTEVE & MARGA’S HOUSE / GIRLS’ BEDROOM [15']

“This is the scene when Frida shows her dolls to Anna. My annotations refer to directing actors so I can remember each character’s intentions. When the shoot is not chronological it’s relevant to have these notes at hand. I also scribbled something about the space since the room where we shot didn’t quite match the script about certain spatial notions. At the bottom there’s a pencil drawing about the three camera positions planned for this scene. It’s simple but allows the girls to move around freely.”

18 EXT. ESTEVE & MARGA’S HOUSE/ DAY [23’]

“This is the scene where Frida mimics her mother when playing with Anna. In that playing situation we had room for some improvisation and I marked in red the way the dialogue should go, with the sentences retrieved from my mother’s vocabulary. I also marked the time when they could start playing at their own pace. Below the pencil picture shows four shots which were supposed to cover the entire playing sequence between Frida and Anna in one single take. We actually did many, all different, and in each of them Anna proposes a different game. The last one was chosen.”

57. INT. ESTEVE & MARGA’S HOUSE/ PARENTS’ ROOM - NIGHT [63']

“This is the scene where Frida and Anna go to the parents’ bed. Again the annotations correspond to directing the actors. The pencil drawing refers to the shoot of Marga and Esteve’s bedroom. We filmed it in one single take with the camera following with a panoramic mouvement as the girls walked in.”

74. INT. ESTEVE & MARGA’S HOUSE/ KITCHEN - NIGHT [79']

“This is the scene where Frida runs away. The annotations also refer to directing the actors, when the two girls are meant to speak in a quiet voice and also focus on Anna when Frida goes away. Also, some dialogues cropped up during rehearsal which I preferred to my own initial one. At the bottom there’s a pencil drawing with a single camera positioning. Sequence takes are hard with such young actors, hence the annotation suggesting another option. We managed to shoot the scene as that proposed on the picture.”

Herewith four pages of the annotated script:

  • 12. INT. ESTEVE & MARGAS HOUSE / GIRLS ROOM. Frida shows her dolls to Anna.
  • 18 EXT. ESTEVE & MARGAS HOUSE / DAY. Frida mimics her mother when playing with Anna.
  • 57. INT. ESTEVE & MARGA’S HOUSE / PARENTS ROOM. Frida and Anna walk into the parents room.
  • 74. INT. ESTEVE & MARGA’S HOUSE/ KITCHEN. Frida runs away at night and Anna goes down to the kitchen
