As opposed to 'direct cinema', the filmmakers in the USSR had no possibilities to film with light and portable film cameras, which would have helped to capture the reality they observed. However, that did not stop cinematographer Kornelijus Matuzevičius, who used a noisy and clumsy Konvas camera, to capture more delicate scenes, such as the interior of the narrow-gauge railway train.
